Can we capture reality, or just our perception of it?

REAL
/ ILLUSION

Is photography a reflection of truth, or a distortion of it?

Photography has long been considered a medium of truth—a way to document reality and preserve moments exactly as they are. From historical events to personal memories, photographs serve as tangible records of the past, allowing us to relive experiences and witness the world through another’s lens. However, even the simplest photograph is shaped by choices: the angle, the lighting, the framing, and the moment captured. These decisions influence how a viewer perceives the image, raising the question of whether photography truly reflects reality or merely presents a curated version of it.

With the rise of digital technology, the line between truth and distortion in photography has become increasingly blurred. Advanced editing tools, filters, and AI-powered enhancements allow images to be altered with ease, changing colors, removing imperfections, or even fabricating entire scenes. Social media amplifies this effect, where visuals are often manipulated to fit ideals of beauty, adventure, or success. While these modifications can enhance artistic expression, they also contribute to a world where reality is selectively crafted, making it difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is an illusion.

Despite these concerns, photography remains a powerful tool for storytelling, emotion, and personal interpretation. Rather than a strict reflection of truth, photography can be seen as a medium that captures perspectives, emotions, and moments in time. Whether it is photojournalism exposing hidden realities or fine art photography exploring abstract ideas, every photograph tells a story—not necessarily an objective truth, but a subjective one.
